The Nikitskaya church

The Nikitskaya church

The Nikitskaya church was built in 1762 – 1765 instead of the previous wooden church by the merchant Semyon Lazarev. The Kozmodemyanskiy monastery was located at this place in the 18th century, mentioned in the chronicles. One of them tells us a story about the murder of Andrei Bogolyubsky. When chaos spread in Vladimir and Bogolyubovo "General confusion and no one wanted to think about the dead Prince", the abbot of the Kozmodemyanskiy monastery , despite the danger, appeared in the princely chamber, honoring the memory of the deceased Prince with funeral singing.

The church has acquired its name in honor of the Holy Martyr Nikita. Its architecture is typical for the traditional refectory churches of that time.Externally, the church is significantly different from the ones built at the same time: it was erected in the tradition of the palace architecture, in the Baroque style. The Nikitskaya church is the refectory type, has 3 floors, each floor has its iconostasis. The church was closed in 1938. Since 1945 this building hosts the vladimir experimental scientific-restoration production workshop. The beauty of the church makes it one of the most interesting monuments of the Baroque architecture in the Russian province.
