The Church of the Ascention

The Church of the Ascention

It was erected on a tall picturesque hill, outside “the earthen town”. In ancient times there was located the wooden Ascension monastery, founded, apparently, by Vsevolod III. As reported in the Laurentian chronicle, in the year of 1187 in the monastery stayed in the Chernigov's bishop Porphyry, who came to the Prince of Vladimir to eliminate the enmity it with the Ryazan Prince Gleb and thereby to strengthen the unity of the North-Eastern Russia.

In 1238 the monastery had been burned by the Mongol-Tatars, but later was rebuilt and existed until 1764.

Preserved stone Church was built in 1724. It represents a good example of the pillarless temple, created in the tradition of urban architecture of the XVII century. Its facades are decorated with kokoshniks and curved window frames. Inside the temple has the cloistered arch with strikings and drum light. On the walls remains an interesting painting belonging to the early nineteenth century.

In 1813, to the main volume of the Church was added in the forms of classicism from the North side - the Church of the Intercession of the Virgin, and from the West — a slender three-tiered bell tower in honor of the victory over the French in Patriotic war.In 1863 on the South side appeared Annunciation chapel.

Expressive architectural spaces of the Church decorate the South panorama of the old part of the city.
