Viewing point on the Kozlov Val

If you see the hill in the central part of the city, which is markedly different in height from the surrounding landscape, be sure it is the remains of an ancient city's ramparts. And each of them may become an unusual platform for a panoramic view of the city streets. This one was specially equipped on the Kozlov Val. Once it adjoined directly to the Golden gate, and now was separated from it by the roadway and the sidewalk. One of the urban legends says that the way to the detour of the Golden gate was paved by the angry demand of Catherine II, when the carriage of the Empress stuck in the arched doorway at the entrance to the city. The shaft was left untouched in memory of the glorious past. In fact, in the XVIII century in many Russian cities the ramparts were razed to lead them to the European standards, and the detour around the gates appeared at the turn of the XVIII-XIX centuries. By the way, the name of the shaft can also mislead: it is not necessary to think that the cattle walked there. In the XIX century, a citizen of Vladimir Alexey Fedotovich Kozlov bought this place and planted the cherry orchard there. Then the shaft has acquired the name of Kozlov. In consequence, it was known as Zlatovratskiy and Borovetskiy – in honor of another vladimir citizen. The shaft was transformed into a boulevard in the XIX-th century with Nikolay Borovetskiy's money-flower beds were planted and benches for strolling townspeople installed.
